Ben Paterson, piano
Andy Brown, guitar
Clark Sommers, bass
I first met pianist Ben Paterson in 2015 when he came to the Whiskey Lounge to perform with Paul Marinaro and Clark Sommers. I had met Paul and Clark previously and was already a fan of both. But about a minute into their first set I knew I also wanted to be president of the Ben Paterson fan club. This guy is astounding. Ben combines a thoughtful approach with a deft touch, quick mind, deep soul, generous spirit, and beautiful melodic ideas that just spin and spin and spin. My oh my. Originally from Philadelphia, Ben spent years living and working – and delighting audiences – in Chicago before moving to New York a few years ago, where he now performs at all the premier clubs. Well, good news: Ben will be swinging through the Midwest on a brief tour and I can’t tell you how delighted I am that one of his stops will be on our stage at Studio5. He will be joined by guitarist, Andy Brown, and bassist, Clark Sommers, forming a stellar drummer-less piano trio in the mold of early Nat King Cole and Oscar Peterson. We will be recording this performance for an episode of Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so this is bound to be a very special night with a true rising star in the world of jazz. Do yourself a favor. I wasn’t kidding, right? See you there. –SR
