We are thrilled to welcome the dynamic contemporary dance company, The Seldoms, for their first appearance at Studio5. In its sixteenth season, The Seldoms makes dance works of bold, exacting physicality driven by inquiry in contemporary issues. Under the direction of choreographer Carrie Hanson, the company is committed to bringing audiences an expanded experience of dance that ignites thought around real-world issues. RockCitizen presents an immersive sonic, visual, and kinetic environment that recalls countercultural spaces and powerful voices of change of the 1960s and 70s and connects them to a larger history of people pursuing breakthroughs and transformations in their lives and worlds. A companion piece to The Seldoms’ acclaimed Power Goes (2015), RockCitizen looks at historic social movements that rode waves of protest, experimentation, hedonism, and dissonance in efforts to remake what it means to be a citizen. The figures in RockCitizen call – and agitate – for freedom; to be, to express, to work, to love. The work surveys different sites of opposition – street, state, stage – to find both cultural and political modes of resistance. Dance, dialogue, and song unfold under the "Brascape," a spectacular, mobile net of 216 colored bras designed by Bob Faust. The Brascape, in flux and layered in meaning, evokes the psychedelic rock poster saturated in color, military camo netting, the rainbow of the gay pride flag, and of course, the bra as symbol of the Women's Lib movement. RockCitizen attempts to capture the tumultuous mix of voices and energies of a transformative time in the country, and asks how these same movements operate in today’s America.

This is an absolutely fascinating piece by a fascinating company. You can learn much more about the creation of RockCitizen and the talented artistic team behind it at The Seldoms’ website HERE.

The performance is designed for ages 12 and above, and runs approximately one hour without intermission. An artist/audience discussion follows the show each night.

Cash bar, light snacks, free parking right outside! Doors open for cocktails at 7:30.

[NOTE: ONLINE TICKET SALES END ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THIS EVENT. REMAINING TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR.]
