THE MASTER OF THE JAZZ GUITAR – AND THE INTERNET – RETURNS!
If you have followed this jazz series or its predecessor at the Whiskey Lounge you will be familiar with Andy Brown. He’s one of the most sought-after jazz guitarists in the city, and for all the right reasons. Andy is a masterful player and a great guy – it’s no wonder so many people want him in their lineup, and as a result he has appeared on our stage many times. Well, Andy is just at home leading a band as he is being a sideman, and occasionally we are lucky to have him show up at our place in a group that he fronts. That is the case for this special performance. It’s become rarer for jazz groups to maintain a steady personnel, but for the past several years this quartet has held a weekly engagement at Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago. The result is a tight-knit, straight-ahead groovy ensemble that is absolutely infectious. The other fellows (Jeremy Kahn, Joe Policastro & Phil Gratteau) are all great players and long-time friends … but we’ve never had them all together at Studio5 in this context. This should be a blast. Oh – you may be wondering why I referred to Andy as the master of the jazz guitar AND the internet. Well, several years ago he played a solo concert for us at the Whiskey Lounge and the YouTube video from that show went absolutely jazz-viral. In fact, if you google “jazz guitar”, the first video that shows up is Andy’s show from the Whiskey Lounge, currently at over 1.6 million views! Wow! How can all those people be wrong? They’re not! Click on the video below to watch it, and then head over to Studio5 to hear him in person!
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! –SR
