Doug Lofstrom & the New Quartet was founded in 2001 and has had the same members since: James Sanders, violin; Leandro Lopez Varady, piano; Michael Levin, woodwinds; Sarah Allen, drums and Doug Lofstrom, bass. This performance will also include guest flutist, Laura Hamm. New Quartet has a repertoire of jazz from all eras, world music and Lofstrom’s original music, which is heavily influenced by both. They are not shy about tackling difficult, even virtuosic pieces and a typical set can include early Ellington, tangos by Piazzolla, Middle-Eastern music and elements of free jazz. A pretty exciting mix.
A Chicago native, Doug Lofstrom has been composing prolifically since the 1970s; his wide-ranging style reflects his ongoing involvement in dance, film, theater and symphonic music. Lofstrom has been posting videos every month since June, 2017, many of which feature the New Quartet. This show at Studio 5 will have mixed media: It will be built around several live musical performances with integrated video (using our Studio5 projection system).
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there. -SR
